Breaking new ground with music championing peace and unity
Following in the footsteps of Beethoven (‘Ode to Joy’), Bob Dylan (‘Blowin’ in the Wind’), John Lennon (‘Imagine’) and many others, a British musician with chart-topping solo albums is about to release a new single on the Heritage record label, harnessing music’s power to bring about positive change and unity in our troubled world.
Cry PEACE is the creation of Laurence Perkins, who has combined the bassoon’s expressive voice with natural sounds, multitracking, special effects and surround-sound audio*. This 21st century presentation offers a wordless musical message of peaceful coexistence that can instantly connect and communicate with any person of any nation or culture.
It was created as one of a number of fundraising projects for the UK-Med organisation, who are providing vital medical support in Ukraine and Gaza at this moment.
Perkins says: “You only have to look at the impact of Bob Geldof’s Band Aid to see that music crosses all boundaries. We need a new way of doing things.” He is continuing to support UK-Med with fundraising concert tours, including a new programme for 2026, ‘Wild Britain’, which will launch at Edinburgh Fringe next August before touring around the U.K.
The music of Cry PEACE, written by Perkins, features ancient medieval modes (musical scales) creating a timeless quality, including a distant chorus of the medieval plainchant ‘Dies irae’ (‘Day of terror’), used by countless composers in many famous musical works. The solo voice is the bassoon, with an ancestry dating back more than 2000 years. The video (featuring the same audio) offers inspiring images of nature (all from the British Isles) with special effects. These include a beautiful sky which becomes hideously blood-soaked after a series of explosions. The video title panel features the word ‘peace’ in every world language. At the end is a number of quotes from the legendary Catalonian cellist Pablo Casals, who was a lifelong pacifist.
The audio version of Cry PEACE will be released digitally on all major streaming platforms by Heritage Records on 6th November, and the video will be released on YouTube and Vimeo, at https://laurenceperkins.com/concertsforpeace
